When it comes to common public, an internet connection is necessary. Yes, of course for work! But what do most people do in their relaxed hours? I quickly browsed some sites for statistics and found awfully that Facebook is indeed the most used and most pleasant site for the common man. When the common man finds time and data, he 'spontaneously' logs on to his Facebook account. He is even aimless there, he unendingly scrolls through unending posts(of which most are worthless and user-centric), lands up in a group chat or starts emotional word exchange with a well-known person. He is involved vividly at the social networking site till some serious distraction takes him away suddenly for the time being. And without practice, this becomes the daily (rather hourly) task of a common man. The young is most prone to be a victim of this. Now these times spent there did not 'really' yield much, as they mainly included gossips and appraisals/criticism.

Now, what I would recommend: You have free time, then know how people are doing around the world. Ask questions, answer people, get ideas, learn a new thing. See what a thing means, track the progress of science and technology. I mean, instead of knowing your friends even better, you can know people internationally better. Recently, I found Quora damn interesting. Its just a pleasure to browse through the thoughts that develop in people's mind all over the globe. StackExchange is a same, or an matured version of Quora. Here people post great questions. It is fascinating to see how ideas pop up in human brains. And once you register there and start answering, you earn acclamation and slowly that Facebook is wiped off your cyber-checklist.
