Why flight tickets are so costly

Needless to say, airlines have always tried to maintain the tradition, "We transport the rich" and thereby a rail ticket is always economy worthy for the middle class. But if one takes a closer insight into the air system, it is quite clear that the airlines don't profit a lot from the business, as it apparently seems to a common man.Lot of factors determine the ultimate price of the ticket, and most importantly, flight pricing is dynamic, very much dynamic. You can fly from Kolkata to Chennai at a fare as low as 2.5k while that may at times cost you more than 25k. So, I tried to list some factors that determine the logic behind air ticket pricing.

  • Fuel: This makes the most impact as aeroplane fuels are notoriously costly. A single gallon of air fuel can cost about 365 INR while a single gallon of fuel may fly the airplane only 1.078 kilometers! But still the total fuel cost when divided among all the passengers, it is really a tiny price to pay, fuel fee counts to only 20% of the total ticket cost!!
  • Crew fee: The pilots and the cabin crew need to be paid decently, as working on airplanes can be  risky jobs at times. That adds up to the previous estimate to make up 50% of the ticket price.
  • Security: While you fly with peace, there are people on Earth who shed sweats to ensure that the plane is 'absolutely' under control. People deal with costly radar equipments to ensure that your journey goes exactly as you expected.
  • Aircraft maintenance: Every flight of an aircraft makes some obvious wear and tear on it and for ensuring safety and long life of the aircraft, it needs to checked everyday for repairs and maintenance. A hair crack on a single glass is even a matter of worry for the aircraft engineers!
  • TAXES: Finally, these make up the remaining that makes your fare go really high!
So, its quite justifiable that the airlines do not eat up all the money you paid for ticket, rather take only a small part of the profit. And running an airline is a very risky operation, any huge loss may result in an unstable economy and consequently collapse of the airline.
A small campaign was started by SpiceJet that wanted the Government to reduce taxes to enable the middle class take up flying as a regular and economic means of travel.
